In truth, more than Grace’s ankle stung. Her backside ached from a solid impact on stone and her palms were likely scratched, if not bleeding. But in all honesty, her situation could have been a great deal worse. And Frederick was coming for her. She smiled in the dark, thankful for the bit of sunlight shining down into the space.

If only she could see a little more, perhaps she could make out where she was.

She sat up straighter and pulled her satchel close, digging into it until her fingers found what she sought. A candle. It was a very good thing she’d read about undiscovered tombs. Someone or other always seemed to need a candle.

With quick movements, she lit the tiny wick, and the glow blazed against the deep shadows surrounding her. Immediately she realized two things. One, she was much closer to a wall than she realized. And two, a pair of eyes were staring back at her. She opened her mouth to scream, but then logic kicked in. How could a pair of eyes be staring at her from a wall?

She blinked and the wall cleared before her. Paintings. Hundreds of them. And hieroglyphs.

She pressed her hand against the wall and pushed to a stand. The paintings continued on each wall, and though the room was small, she could see it bled into another. She turned back to investigating the paintings with what light she had. They were of the same style as the paintings she’d seen in Meryra’s tomb, with the sun disc on display as well as the royal family. Yet these looked even more vibrant. Was it because they’d not been uncovered in millennia?

She slid along the wall toward some debris in a corner. Vases! A chair?

Her breath came out in a shudder. Could it be that this tomb wasn’t completely robbed back in antiquity? That these were actual treasures from three thousand years ago?

The light from above blinked in and out. Her candle flickered in response. She looked up to see the silhouette of a man slowly descending on a rope. Resting her elbow against the wall to offset the weight on her ankle, she drew out a few pieces of paper and began to trace some of the carvings while waiting for Frederick. Who knew what might happen once the professor and his team came into the cave. With more air or daylight or breathing people, the walls may very well collapse. She had no idea.

A woman appeared prominently on the walls, and she was holding a baby. A male child, if Grace interpreted it correctly. And Akhenaten was placing a hand on the child in some sort of blessing. What letter was that one? The cup. But the rest of the symbols were marked out, like with Akhenaten. And in this tomb, the king’s face was not desecrated.

Grace turned away from the wall in time to see Frederick land quite romantically before her, his hair in delicious disarray and those dark of eyes of his sweeping over her with a most tender concern.
